Most creators focus on the wrong numbers. Here's what to actually track.

Tier 1: Critical Metrics

1. Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Percentage of impressions that become views.

What it tells you: Are your titles and thumbnails working? Target: 4-10% is good, higher for returning viewers Warning: CTR naturally drops as videos spread wider

2. Average View Duration (AVD)

How long people actually watch.

What it tells you: Is your content engaging? Target: 50%+ of video length Focus: Look at the retention curve shape

3. Average Views Per Viewer

How many videos each viewer watches.

What it tells you: Are you building a loyal audience? Target: Above 1.3 is excellent Growth: Higher = algorithm loves you

4. Impressions

How many times YouTube showed your video.

What it tells you: Is YouTube promoting you?

5. Traffic Sources

Where viewers find you.

What it tells you: Which discovery methods work

6. Subscriber Conversion

Views to subscriber ratio.

What it tells you: Are viewers committing to your channel?
